Stage 17 - Through the Rhone Valley

Pont du Gard to Gap

A long stage (200km) that takes Tony from the historic Pont du Gard, through the Rhône Valley and into the foothills of the Alps. Thankfully there are only two categorised climbs, however the tougher of the two, the Col de la Sentinelle (a category 3 climb of 5.2km at 5.4%) does come just before the descent into Gap at the end of the stage.

On the way Tony will pass through Buis-les-Baronnies, a place renowned for two reasons:
  1. It is the centre of the linden growing region in France and produces roughly two thirds of the nation's linden flowers. With multiple uses in teas and infusions, the flower is sought after by herbalists for its sedative and anti-spasmodic properties. Its cultivation was so important to Buis-les-Baronnies, they hold a Linden Fair every year.
  2. Exactly 35 years ago, 5 young Scots ventured forth from Dunfermline for the first time and arrived in Buis-les-Baronnies. Unfortunately the duty free Glenlivet, Pernod and Martini Extra Dry (of all things!) did not mix well with the wonderful home-made cherry pie provided by the Gites' owner. Nothing quite concentrates the mind like trying to remove deep red stains!

Drink of the day has to be Pernod although any pastis would do.

Song of the day is Cherry Bomb by John Mellancamp, because it was!
