Stage 13 - The Individual Time Trial
Pau to Pau
For the pros, this is always a massive day as they attempt to take seconds off their nearest rivals without the support of any team mates. For Tony and his fellow Loopers this will be a much needed gentle cycle around Pau and the surrounding countryside.
At only 27.2km and with no significant climbs Tony’s cycling will be done in the morning leaving him the rest of the day to prepare for the massive stages to come.
Pau is the home of the Étoiles de Pau, a prestigious eventing competition on a par with the Badminton and Burghley Horse Trials.
Pau is also the capital of the former Principality of Béarn which has a long history of gastronomy. The classic Béarnaise sauce (perfect with a rare fillet steak) takes its name from the area even though it was thought to have been accidentally invented just outside Paris.
Drink of the day is Château Jolys Terre Essencia, Jurançon Sec – a perfect accompaniment to a summer salad.
Song of the day is China in Your Hand by T’Pau – typical Eighties nonsense from a band named after a Vulcan Elder from Star Trek!
Comments
Glad Stato recommended a Jurançon Sec - lovely wine!
Hope the trundle around Pau has provided a restful day ahead of the mountains.
